Ongoing Projects
India ENIGMA Initiative for Global Aging & Mental Health
Funding: National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute on Aging (NIA), Grant No. 1R01AG060610-01A1
Role: Principal Investigator (MPI-Contact) along with Prof G. Venkatasubramanian (MPI) and Prof Paul M Thompson (PI-US)
Collaborating Institute: University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, California, USA
Status: Initiated at NIMHANS in November 2022
We launch the India ENIGMA Initiative for Global Aging & Mental Health - a globally coordinated study of brain aging and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Our overall goal is to identify predictive markers in the blood, genome, and epigenome, and psychosocial/lifestyle factors that influence brain aging in India, to better understand prognosis, and to support personalized risk evaluations on each continent. We plan to identify etiological pathways to resilience using the rich biobanking strategy developed by our partners at NIMHANS in India.

Accelerator program for Discovery in Brain disorders using Stem cells (ADBS) (https://www.ncbs.res.in/adbs/home)
Funding: Department of Biotechnology (Govt of India) [Co-ordinators: Dr Sanjeev Jain (NIMHANS) & Dr Raghu Padinjat (NCBS)]
Role: Co-Principal Investigator (Co-lead of the Neuroimaging Core of the project)
Status: Ongoing
This is a multi-institutional project involving NIMHANS, National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) & the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (InStem). ADBS is an integrative approach that links basic research with clinical studies of mental illness. The ADBS program would follow up a cohort of young adults from families where there appears to be a high incidence of mental illness (5 disease phenotypes). These families and individuals will be characterised and followed up using detailed investigations ranging from clinical and neuropsychological evaluations to immunometabolic assays to multimodal neuroimaging to molecular genetic and stem cell research.
